It's crunch time on The NOR CAL Report! On this week's Report, Giants fan fave Pablo Sandoval joins the boys for a rap about all things Panda.
Plus, the Bay sports scene offers plenty of exciting entries!

The Giants hit the stretch drive a few good breaks away from a rare playoff berth. But do Pablo and the G-Men have what it takes to outlast their many N.L. competitors?

The A's plug on, still alive in a division betrothed to another. And if their new pitching-and-defense model looks familiar, well, that's because it is...

The Raiders pluck one from the depths against the lowly Rams — and rediscover some weapons it seems they never knew they had...

And the 49ers drop a classic home matchup to the champion Saints, burning one down to the wick but ultimately blowing the costly turnover battle. For a team suddenly 0-2, is there such a thing as a "signature loss?"

And the Earthquakes rally behind their new star, riding an improved O to the brink of the playoffs. Can the temblors make waves into November?

There's always somethin' shakin' — on The NOR CAL Report!

UP NEXT: The Niners seek redemption, and the Raiders momentum — while the Giants and A's — plus the Earthquakes — still hope to play some late fall ball. Plus, the fallout from the Nellie ouster in Golden State.

Wavering over whether waving bye-bye to all-time winningest coach Don Nelson — who last experienced the NBA finals as a player — was a good move for the Warriors? ESPN says, nice work, Lacob and co. If letting Nellie go doesn't seem like rocket science, imagine the difference it makes to new general Keith Smart — and for Smart's ability to start fresh, eventually, with key free agents, along with alleged Nelson lackey Larry Riley...

49er faithful, wondering how the top draftees are doing on the makeshift O-line? Well, here's one answer — former second rounder David Baas, once a benchwarmer, might remain the starter at center, even after the venerable Eric Heitmann returns from his injury...

Amazing what's transpired in the N.L. West this year. Say, what did ever happen to Matt Kemp — and how many guys would take Troy Tulowitzki's .351-14-34 September line over a full season?

From A's camp, it's good to see former NOR CAL Report guest and all-around good guy athlete Chris Carter get his first major league hit — even if it took about 33 more at-bats than he would have liked. Hey, sometimes they come in bunches...

For bayball fans looking for some hope in SABResque statistics, our guest Pablo the Panda can take solace in his BABIP — or batting average on balls in play. Most guys hit around .300 on batted balls. With Pablo's flat swing, so many pitches he connects on turn into line drives — and he was over .350 on such balls in '08-'09. This year , Pablo's balls in play have dropped at just a .288 clip — indicating he's suffered from some bad luck in the field that should change very soon...

Not turned off by new age-y stats? Well, Bill James is the guru — and he's got a fascinating piece (in Slate magazine, of all places) on Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, and other personalities that were larger than the game. Says James, it's American to respect the rules — and even more American to break them.

We're love the rules — but we've been known to bend a few. Stay tuned for where and how — only on The NOR CAL Report!
