Welcome back to The N
OR CAL Report! On this week's Report: the lads welcome Giants bullpen stalwart Jeremy Affeldt. Jeremy talks all things Giants baseball, including what motivates him to be so active in the community — and so goofy in the G'ints reshaped clubhouse. Plus a special NFL training camp preview, and more:

The A's show they've got a lot of life, surviving a brutal stretch with a number of encouraging performances. What does this mean for their veteran-free future?

The Giants down the Dodgers — in one exciting game out of three. Still, with the G-Men clinging to division dreams, the series generated everything from steroid debates to bad calls, ejections, and — don't look now — a playoff atmosphere...

And the Earthquakes are back to being a footnote, ducking humbly to the Crew after a promising start;

The Raiders camp opens with a number of questions, from the new wideout to the wide quarterback. Did they let Derrick Burgess slip away too cheap? And do they have some serious chances going forward, or just one great excuse?

And the 49ers season could go either way — including major questions at WR, and QB. Say, this team reminds us of...

It all sounds somehow familiar — let's take a closer look, on The NOR CAL Report!

UP NEXT: The Giants lean on some new teammates as they scramble for playoff life. The A's look to squeeze hope and life out of a talented rookie crew; and the Raiders and 49ers learn more about NFL life in 2009.

All the latest info, anecdotes and opinions from the Report's own Jess Zitrin.

An episode with Jeremy Affeldt wouldn't be complete without an immediate plug for his foundation, found at jaffeldt.com. (No, perhaps he did not spend all $3.5M on web design.) Jeremy also mentioned his involvement in a very worthy S.F. based group: the Not For Sale campaign. I can't stress the importance of the work Dr. Batstone, Jeremy, and the rest of NFS's supporters have done. Please check out the site and learn more.

As some of you know, I work in the ballpark for a unique youth-employment group called Juma Ventures; if you've ever bought a corn dog, latte, Haagen Dazs bar, or yes, Powerade out there, you've contributed to our youth vendors' savings toward college (thanks!) Jeremy's love for youth  has me thinking he'd make a fine spokesman. And his excitement is contagious: you know he's up for anything. Perhaps that's why he's finally found his niche, hurling the eighth for S.F...

Speaking of Juma, check us out in the Harvard Business Review. My own paycheck aside, the money making "social enterprise" model is increasingly popular, pleasingly sustainable, and worth knowing about as the American private and public sectors are simultaneously remade...

For those still interested by the steroid/supplement/PED debate, the colorful Bronson Arroyo has some refreshing insight to offer about his own robust usage— including, God forbid, actual shades of gray. Anyone who's contemplated obscene posters or letters to Barry, Manny, or Mac: this is required reading...

Meanwhile, I can speak for Lex, and most Giants fans, in agreeing with Bruce Jenkins: the Giants are a potential playoff team; what they're not is on a plane with the powerful Dodgers...

What to make of Michael Vick resurfacing so quickly, with the Eagles? I'm not much for splashy stone-throwing on these stories. I will say: I'm not angry or surprised he's back, but it's nice he's stuck behind a Pro Bowler...

Even for those who don't consider fishing a sport (who would be commissioner? There's a good joke in here somewhere) this article on a short-pants angler is great for a chuckle...

Back to baseball, where we Reporters are closely monitoring the progress of last week's interview, 20-year-old Tim Alderson, with Pittsburgh's system. In his second start with
the Double-A Altoona Curve: six innings, zero hits. (Yes, Tim's done this before.) But oh, the challenges of the hardball! Tim's third start: three innings, ten baserunners, five runs. Maybe next year...

As promised, a link to the very interesting, oft-overlooked page in A's history, in which they were literally in cahoots with the Yankees...

You may have noticed, Lex and I don't jump to cover MMA, nor is this a frequent spot for cupcake photos. But I'll admit to spending a tad extra time reading up on undefeated starlet Gina Carano, below...

We can't wait to keep checking in on the 49ers' and Raiders' team pages. And remember, if you want more firsthand gridiron coverage, you have the power — send an email, make a phone call, get up off the couch!

We've got all winter for chips and dips — but the summer's still sizzlin', on The NOR CAL Report!
