Welcome to a special new NOR CAL Report! This week, Giants stud arm Matt Cain stops in for a stroll through the deep south, the low minors, andGiants greats past and present. Plus, there's plenty more to talk aboutin Nor Cal sports:

The Giants swing into the break on a high note, buoyed by some unlikely heroes, and topped by an historicno-no from the an unlikely source. Should they risk their clubhouse mojo by shooting for the moon in 2009?

The A's are still feeling the growing pains of a young, cheap team. But as the twenty-somethings improve, isn't it time to embrace the Coliseum for what it is — and isn't — and play up the past just a little bit more?

The Earthquakes surrender pronto, and are leveled by Toronto. But the Quakes have begun to solve their offensive woes, and the Toronto match highlights MLS's success in colder climes...

It's always crackin', on The NOR CAL Report!

UP NEXT: The Giants and A's look to bust out of the gate with gusto after the break, while the Earthquakes fight to stay relevant at the onset of the NFL and NBA preseasons.

The NOR CAL Blog:

All the latest info, anecdotes and opinions from the Report's own Jess Zitrin.

In deference to Matt Cain, I was supposed to outro the show with a Jason Aldean track. But I didn't want to hear She's Country one more time — so here's Matt's other favorite, Kings of Leon, instead, with a dandy from their debut album...

Speaking of this week's interview, did you crack up at Matt's Gerber Baby comment? I can't top that — except to offer this completely unbiased comparison:

The Giants say goodbye to a good man this week, marketing guru Pat Gallagher, whose inventions included the Croix de Candlestick and the Crazy Crab. Regarding the Crab, Gallagher explains: "
We did this survey. 'If we had a mascot, would you boo it?' And 62 percent of the people said yes..."

Like Scott Ostler, I was horrified at the ESPN "Ultimate Rankings" of the 122 teams in the four major pro leagues. (Is MLS worthy of being considered a "major" league just as much as hockey? Drop us a line. I vote Yes.) Other than the Giants, whose marks will rise after a solid year, and the Sharks, Nor Cal teams scored a collective "atrocious." Or did you think the Warriors were on a "Title Track," and the Coliseum is one of the best places in the nation to watch a game? If so, you should travel more...

No, friend of the show Bengie Molina did not make the All-Star team. But he and brother Yadier had a good cry over Yadier's starting nod — a debut appearance for the renowned Molina clan...

If you can claim that (a) you're not a woman, and (b) you wanted a floppy hat on Breast Cancer Awareness night, the A's will give you fifty bucks and other goodies as reparations. No, really...

Warriors G.M. Larry Riley on draftee Stephen Curry: "We drafted a point guard." It's the right call...

I've heard from many of you, asking why not more A's interviews, what about Pandoval, how 'bout visits with more pro teams? I say: great! Don't underestimate your power; email the right people. The wall between you and your favorite stars is falling, and you, the user, are the pickaxe! If you want better content, well, each team's media relations office is listed on their website under Rosters / Front Office. These people are paid to care; your vote counts so much more than in any political election. And if you're feelin' shy, you can at least pump us up to your sports-loving friends!

Thanks as always — you know we enjoy it. We'll see you again soon — on The NOR CAL Report!
