Welcome back to The NOR CAL Report — where the sun rises and sets in the West. This week, on the Report:

The Giants silence some critics, as their soft-spoken bats make some stalwart pitching stand up;

The precocious A's try to stay healthy and afloat, even with no unit hitting on all cylinders;

The 49ers and Raiders hope to outfox each other in the volatile wide receiver draft market;

And who says Sharks don't lay eggs? The San Joseans lay a major one, as a rookie goaltender helps send the local boys packing early — yet again.

UP NEXT:  Giants first-rounder and future star Buster Posey weighs in on the pro grind, his teammates, and a vision of life atop the N.L. West. The Giants and A's look to capitalize on the schedule, while the 'Quakes hope to move up the standings.

The NOR CAL Blog:

All the latest info, anecdotes and opinions from the Report's own Jess Zitrin.

The San Jose Earthquakes are in season, but didn't rate a word on air from us this week. Why? No, not the two uninspiring losses to so-so teams. It's the paltry 4,000-odd crowd at Buck Shaw that makes me think no one cares for the crew right now. Just on personality: I miss Gavin Glinton, James Riley, Ronnie O'Brien, et al...

Plain and simple, Doug Wilson is getting pissed off. And I'm sure not arguing — though I will say, even if you weren't a little tee'd, it's politically necessary that the G.M. act a tad heated about now...

After fiddling through Lex blabbing half the show (sorry, dude) I did manage to find a version of the unfortunate — but very entertaining — Jahvid Best neon barf video that hadn't been rescinded for rights violations yet...

Find out why Giants closer Brian Wilson felt it necessary to close down his Twitter account. Could a recent blown save really be the result of a night drinking in Arizona?

Some of these old sportswriters have got it down: S.I.'s Peter King tabbed the Niners to nab Michael Crabtree at #10, after the Raiders open the door by taking a speedier wideout. Can't blame King if the Rad's went for the wideout who wasn't even on anyone's first round board...

Fantasy types, want a terrific pickup in baseball? Phil Hughes is one of those guys so overrated, he's underrated. He just aced his first 2009 start with the Yankees; take a look at his world-beating minor league numbers, then remind yourself he's just 22.

Thanks as always for the attention. Remember to tell a friend you can't live without The NOR CAL Report!
