Welcome back to another exciting edition of The NOR CAL Report! With Jess back in Cali after the Ohio election madness, there's a lot to talk about — the football teams all over the lot, the Nor Cal hoopsters squaring off, and the Sharkies threatening to run the table. To wit:
The 49ers make the most of their lone MNF appearance. Does the near-miss in 'Zona spotlight their improvement, or their failures?
The Raiders part ways with a Pro Bowler, and can't remember what the endzone looks like. What's to like, and what's a lost cause?
The Kings rebound from a nasty start to build a new streak — the winning kind. What will it take to climb up the Pacific, and get a little respect?
The Warriors are the youngest team in the league, with Nellie and Cap'n Jack the only constants. Can the young core get it together, before the front office tears itself apart?
There's a precious article out by the unsinkable Ray Ratto, lampooning "Li'l Bobby Bad Cop" Rowell and the rest of the bungling owners of the Bay Area. Highly recommended satire; not bad for a daily...
The Sharks own the best record in the game. Are they also its most complete team? And, will this year's newfound swagger finally get them to the promised land?
Find out now — all on this week's brand new NOR CAL Report!
UP NEXT: Sharks star and NHL legend Jeremy Roenick tells the lads about his favorite moments on and off the ice. Plus, the hoopsters try to run with the big boys, while the football squads still have a lot to prove. Meanwhile, the Sharks stare down the NHL's best, and the Giants and A's try to quietly move up the charts.
The NOR CAL Blog:
All the latest info, anecdotes and opinions from the Report's own Jess Zitrin.
There are some perplexing aspects to the A's deal for Matt Holliday. (Greg Smith is gone; the rest of the package appears to be Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez.) First, what do the A's want with a $13 million player in his walk year? Second, what happened to being so high on CarGo's athleticism?
For that matter, if Huston Street ($3.3M in '08) has 94 saves and a 2.88 ERA at age 25, what are the odds he's a future Hall Of Famer?
There's a whisper toward the bottom of one ESPN piece that Oakland might be a good team for Ken Griffey, Jr. Given the aging, diminished offensive guys they've targeted recently, I think he'd be a great fit, and could actually draw a few fans. They do need to pick up more than one bat...
So, Tim Lincecum wins the Cy Young in a walk. True, he's already in his mid-twenties, but in his first full major league season, the Baby Faced Assassin's numbers look very much like the rookie year of another storied phenom...
And speaking of landslides: it makes sense that maybe the most accurate election season pollster would be the managing partner of Baseball Prospectus. Click to see him compare Ted Kennedy to Chase Utley, and discuss Sarah Palin's VORP! (Really...)
One glance at the Warriors' team page says it all. Top article's got the team president saying there's no turmoil; all the articles below detail exactly what kind of turmoil it is that he's denying...
For those who think the Talking Heads' album Stop Making Sense refers to NFL head coaching strategy, the USA Today offers a wonderfully simple proposition for struggling teams like the Raiders: fire the punter!
Last 49ers game: Vernon Davis was sent to the showers by an irate Coach Singletary. This week: Davis declares him "the best coach I've ever had." Guess some guys just need an authority figure.
There's always more, so don't be shy about weighing in with comments! And thanks to all who supported and encouraged my Ohio adventure. I won't say who I was there for — but let's just say I'm a little more "hopeful" about the political process this week.
See ya next week.
