October 2008: Week 4 (Sharks preview, with Ryane Clowe, Patrick Marleau, Jeremy Roenick, Jonathan Cheechoo)
It's time to roll this week's Nor Cal Report out of the oven and onto your plate. Lex and Jess chat with Sharks staples Patrick Marleau, Ryane Clowe, Jonathan Cheechoo, and Jeremy Roenick. Can the fish rise to the top? Northern Cali rolls on...
The Raiders play placekick dominos at the buzzer with the Brett Set. Brett's never lost to the Raiders — but the Raiders have never kicked a 57-yard field goal, either;
The 49ers bid hapless dignity goodbye, and say hello to what might be a battering ram. But does Singletary have the juice to raise the flag anew?
The Sharkies rolled to a strong start, with a single hiccup and a number of highlights. Patty Marleau, Ryan Clowe, Jonathan Cheechoo, and Jeremy Roenick have high hopes for the new regime way past Christmas.
The Earthquakes see the sudden dream suddenly fall. Well, things have got clunky in Silicon Valley. They'll finish out a good season in front of a mature, loyal fan base.
And the A's make news by re-signing an old friend. Why Mark Ellis stayed, and why David Forst will, too.
The seasons are turn, on the latest Northern California Pro Sports Report.
UP NEXT: The Sharks smell blood in the water early; the Earthquakes look to finish strong; and the football squads search for identities. Plus: what looms for the two potential Pacific surprises in Nor Cal? Hoops is on the horizon.
The Nor Cal Pro Sports BLOG:
All the latest info, anecdotes and opinions from the Report's own Jess Zitrin.
Some in the business have accused the A's of being a self-aggrandizing pretty boy. You think being played by Brad Pitt in the Moneyball movie will help? I'm dead serious here. Deep down, you know Billy loves it.
Check out Mike Holmgren's unconvincing denial that he's destined for Mike Nolan's old job with the Niners. Hey, maybe he can convince former LB's coach Singletary that D-coordinator would still be a promotion...
Sharks fans, more good news: the minor league squad is still playing some hairy games, but featuring some strong talent and a brand-new knack for pulling out a W...
Kings fans, your thoughts? The current ESPN the Mag piece likens embracing Ron Artest to a moneyball-esque strategic blindness. Personally, I don't think expecting him to contribute on both ends is a stretch at all.
The Warriors might have thought Corey Maggette's MRI on his hammy was bad news. One day later, they can be certain that C.J. Watson's MRI signals the end of the current strategy to replace Monta. The Wa's just slipped below the Kings in our own private Pacific Division.
Last week, we talked about a possible World Series Game Six being pushed back due to a long-winded political ad. Now I can tell you that Spring Training has been moved forward, in order to better accommodate participation in the World Baseball Classic. Good move — with bball absent from the Olympics, this is how to promote the sport abroad...
I believe: Baseball Think Factory presents evidence that perhaps Bobby Crosby should be replaced. I don't believe: The assertion that Chris Denorfia (a pretty good role player) will provide more than Carlos Gonzalez is worthless.
Just came back from the Earthquakes' final training, and let me say this: you want a take-no-guff Bay Area athlete... you want Joe Cannon. When he says no playoffs is a letdown, he's clearly serious. Huckerby's been a great flavor of the month — but this team takes its cues from Joe, both now and later.
Stay real, 'til next week.
